Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in Beauvais, France in 1927. His father died when he was young, and he was brought up by his grandfather, an artist and expert tapestry maker. In 1944 Givenchy joined Jacques Fath, and worked with him while studying at the Ecole de Beaux Arts part time. After a year, he joined Robert Piguet and then Lucien Lelong
