The \'ugg\' is short for ugly. These boots were never meant to be seen outside the home. Yes farmers wore them AT HOME and surfers wore them TO GET WARM. In Australia, \'ugg\' boots may be street fashionable but only for teens. The rest of us buy them in different colours sure, but to coordinate with our PJs\'. Yes it\'s a trend that has hit our shores as well, but prior to that \'ugg\' boots were merely a neccesity. Must admit though, they are very comfortable and can look cool (navajo poncho, denim mini or skinny jeans tucked in to) but the only time us non-teenies wear them out of the house is apres-ski
