This paper will cover certain themes in women's magazines from the late 1600s to World War II. Though it would be worthwhile to focus on a particular decade or era in women's magazines, I want to look at the full course of their existence, to get a sense of their history and the role they play in women's history. "Women's magazines" is in itself a vast term which would include such obvious titles as Vogue and Good Housekeeping, but would also include Soap Opera Digest and the subgenres of the small pocket horoscopes and True Romance
