Fashion Week Spotlight: Fashion World
Fashion week is upon us yet again, but its hard to think outside of New York for fashion week here in the United States. In all actuality fashion week began in Milan, Italy by the Nazionale della Moda Italiana (the National Chamber of Italian Fashion), which was founded in 1958, where “the Association has pursued a policy of organizational support aimed at the knowledge, promotion and development of Fashion through events with a highly intellectual image in Italy and abroad.” This is a far cry from the 7th on Sixth organization that began Olympus fashion week in New York in 1993.

Second Annual 2007 SIA Fashion Show
SIA held it's second annual fashion show last night, Sunday January 21st, at the Fashion Show Mall in Las Vegas. A crowd of roughly 1,600 people showed up to view the new 2007/08 winter looks.
While the crowd began showing up around 7:00 pm, the show didn't start until an hour later. During the cocktail hour, the growing audience staked chairs along the runway and mingled. Though there was a good mix of manufacturers and retail buyers in attendence—-the retail end far out weighed. But there's nothing like free grilled cheese sandwiches and Red Bull martinis to pull the crowd together.

Women flaunt new dress designs in fashion show
Eighteen female designers at the Nogom Vocational Training Institute celebrated the completion of their training wearing fancier graduation gowns than most. As part of their graduation project, on Sunday they modeled the dresses they had designed themselves: 11 wedding dresses and seven evening gowns. This fashion show was arranged to present the work they did to achieve their diplomas in sewing. The graduates come from several different governorates –Sana’a, Taiz, Hajja, and Ibb. They came to Sana’a to study at this institute for two main reasons: their high school score did not allow them to enter colleges, and they wanted to ensure that they could find public jobs.

Luxury at Lakme, Mumbais Fashion Fest
Now here's a sight you'd be hard-pressed see at a fashion show in Europe or New York: A parade of seventy-plus chiseled male models looking like warrior princes en route to a royal battle. Not only did the "boys," as they're called in Mumbai," display an air of confidence and swagger rare on Western runways, where sullen faces and pin-thin bodies are the aesthetic of choice for male models, but the sheer size of the group most shows feature 25-30 separate models at most was staggering, with just about every Indian supermodel on the bill.

Catwalk: spring/summer 2008
Choice – it could be the mantra of our times. Politicians assume that it’s what we want, and if the international catwalks are anything to go by, designers agree. Once the industry limited its offerings to just a few key looks, and if you didn’t like them, or they didn’t suit you, tough. How quaint that now seems.
